"Life is fair. It's unfair to everyone."

What if we didn't go to bed every night? What if, instead of sleeping every night, we simply kept going until our bodies couldn't handle it anymore? What if people would only sleep when they got to the point of collapsing? What if you never knew when your next night of sleep would be?
Now, that would just be silly, wouldn't it? It sounds like college life during exam time. But, what if that's what it was like all the time?
That's what I feel our life is like when we don't have a designated time to just rest. I'm talking about the Sabbath. It dawned on me that is it part of our natural cycle of life, much like sleep. Yet, it isn't perceived that way.
It has been coming up lately, so I've been thinking about it.
We're all running around non-stop, constantly working, or worrying about working, or procrastinating in the guilty sort of "I should be working" way.
I think we're cheating ourselves, God, and we're actually being less productive overall.
Now... I'm still trying to work out the kinks of observing the sabbath in my life. It isn't easy. You have to work very hard those 6 days of the week so you can be prepared to rest on the seventh. But something is definitely telling me that it's worth it. And, not only that...it's what we're called to do.
I just don't know why something this obvious has never struck me before.

Apparently when Livejournal says "autodraft saved at this time" what it really means is "I didn't save shit, but I'm letting you think I am."

Some people spend all their time trying to figure out the meaning of life. The meaning of life is easy. I am trying to figure out the meaning of death.

I have learned, by studying art that I am not in control
that is something you have to realize doing this the irony that art isn't creating something you see in your head
art is collaborating with your medium
it's a conversation between your idea and the physical barriers that enable or disable you how to adapt to the unexpected and use it in your favor
(you will never be able to create the perfect picture of exactly what you see your in head because the truth is you can do so much better than that. you can't predict what the final product will be but you can always be sure it's something you didn't expect)

Art is such a hard thing to define. Here, I've been thinking to myself "Man, photograhy is so complex." Which is true but then I realized all Art is complex
because Art is almost impossible to define, yet we all know what it is or at least, we think we do.
I guess just in the past couple of months, I've been more keenly aware of the documentation vs. art debate for photography but then I realized drawing and painting were documentation at one point as well and then my art history classes flashed back to me and I realized that half the things we study as 'art' weren't even considered art at the time. a lot of it was just documentation of the way things were
and so photography isn't so different, it's just that since it's the most recent technological development, it's more freshly controversial. all that other stuff is old news.
and now that we've realized photography is not so estranged... we go back to the debate. what makes a photograph art?
as i'm wrestling with this, my opinion at this point in time is Art is creating something therefore if you are taking a photograph of something that's already there (landscape, architecture, etc) it is Documentation.
On the other hand if you not only take a picture of something that is already there if you create something with arranging the subject matter the lighting the process then you have created art.
Which is why am I mainly a portrait photographer because I firmly believe that is artistic expression.
and taking a picture of an abandoned building or a random mountain or a shoe is not art. sorry

So I'm writing this paper for art history, and I found an article about one of Picasso's paintings. Well, it was written by some Indian guy from Delhi for this magazine... and his butchering of the english language is just amazingly funny to me. Not to mention the fact that he actually uses a spanish word on accident in one of the headings... hah.
Here's a gem...
"Here Picasso has also permeated cubism- an art of viewing paintings from different angles- to endow his work with a magical secrecy."
Man, if I were to correct that sentence, let alone this article... I wouldn't even know where to begin haha.
Good try, Mr. Singh. I doubt I could write an article in Hindi, or whatever.
If you're really, REALLy bored... the URL is http://www.diplomatist.com/dipo3rd05/story_11.htm

Oy. So I've been collecting can tabs for a service project since January. (They're due today) I've saved them from everything I've drinken, I've asked to have can tabs from other random people drinking cans in my classes, I had my family save all their can tabs and mail them to me. Today I went through all of the recycling AND trash cans in Johnson Hall Rutledge McLaurin Margeret Nance Bancroft Owens Kinard Dinkins
(ps... I am not exaggerating.)
and......... I HAVE BARELY HALF OF A ZIPLOC BAG FULL!! Seriously, how impossible is it to fill an entire ziploc bag of can tabs? Like, what else could I have possibly have done? I just hope that half a bag is enough... because I went through a LOT to get there haha.
Ahhhhhhhhhhh.

Ahhh Ben Stein is such a liar! I bought Clear Eyes today because my allergies are seriously going to kill me and it's making my eyes itch even MORE!! ahhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and like I finally bought some allergy medicine but i took it like less than an hour ago, and who knows how long that stuff takes to work.
like it's seriously never been this bad before. it's actually preventing me from doing my homework because my eyes itch so bad it hurts and i keep getting random nosebleeds.
ahhhhhh
on the up side; if I go blind, I will no longer have to do any art homework!
So formal is tomorrow and I left my prom dress at home, so I've decided to wear this cute dress I bought for graduation last year it's pretty perfect. its black with white polka dots (big surprise) and I've only gotten to wear it like, twice, and I've never gotten to wear it to a dance yet, so, yay!
I have a good amount of work to do this weekend, but very little time. my drawing class is going to the zoo saturday! that should be fun except for the drawing part hah.

Holy Mackerel
So I'm planning my schedule for next semester and I was writing down all the options and time of General Education-ish classes and this schedule fell into my lap
Tuesday/Thursday 12:30 - 1:45 = History 2:00-3:15 = Writing 3:30-4:45 = Acting I 5:00-6:15 = Math
THAT COULD BE SOMEONE'S SCHEDULE. It's twelve hours, a completely plausible schedule for a full-time college student. Someone could have school two days a week from 12:30-6:15. WHY GOD WHY AM I AN ART MAJOR? I could have this beautifulness.
0.o
Anyway. This class I'm required to take is ONLY offered at one time: Tuesday/Thursday 6:30-9:20 OH YAY TONS OF FUN!!! But I might not have to take it next semester, I might can put it off till Spring 2009, and cross my fingers for a better time. but if that doesn't work, here's what my schedule will be....
Monday/Wednesday 12:30 - 3:20 = Figure Drawing 3:30-6:20 = Basic Photo
Tuesday/Thursday 12:30- 1:45 = History of Photo ~a gen ed class or two, yet to be determined~ 6:30-9:20 Photo Communcation
It's almost exactly what I want, expcept for that stupid night class... I'm only taking it if I have to. *harumph*

Pet Peeve:
When people claim to be "photographers" by taking black and white photos of random objects very close up. A piece of fruit, a wrought iron fence, zoomed in so close you can hardly tell what it is! Oh, how artistic and original! Genius! Then they post their "artwork" on their profiles and their friends encourage them by giving compliments.
I realize there is a lot of learning and experimentation involved in ANY form of art... but come on. If you take a picture of the sidewalk in black and white, and you're like "Gee golly whiz this is great!"... you should probably keep that picture in a box somewhere until you get better. Just a tip.
Probably more on this later.
